Orange chicken, checked against the bag

Battered chicken pieces, golden and crisp, on a parchment liner in an air fryer basket with orange sauce poured over them
Out of the basket at the quote, sauce poured over.

Trader Joe's mandarin orange chicken: a bag of battered dark meat pieces and two sauce packets, frozen, bake and serve. This bag prints an air fryer line of its own next to the oven line, which makes it a different kind of cook from the piccata. The oven line goes into the converter as usual, and the bag's air fryer line waits to be checked against.

The front of the Trader Joe's Mandarin Orange Chicken bag: bake and serve, a savory dish of tender battered chicken with mandarin orange ginger sauce, keep frozen, 22 oz
Battered dark meat pieces and sauce packets, 22 oz.
The heating instructions on the back of the bag: conventional oven, preheat to 400 °F and bake 18 to 20 minutes until crisp, golden and heated through; air fryer, preheat 5 minutes to 400 °F and heat 12 to 14 minutes, turning regularly; sauce on the stovetop or in the microwave
Oven: 400 °F for 18 to 20 minutes. And this time, an air fryer line to check against.

Conventional oven: preheat to 400 °F, pieces on a baking sheet, 18 to 20 minutes until crisp, golden and heated through. Air fryer, same bag: preheat 5 minutes to 400 °F, 12 to 14 minutes, turn regularly. Into the converter goes the oven line only, with the Thick picture: a battered chunk of thigh has a middle the heat still has to reach, the same shape as a nugget.

The quote for a typical basket machine before any rating. Your own machine's numbers come from the front page.

Set beside the bag's own air fryer line, the quote is a notch cooler and within a minute at both ends, with the first look earlier than either. The bag's kitchen got its number by cooking the food. The model got its number from the oven line and nothing else. They landed together, which is the check I wanted.

Frozen battered chicken pieces in a single layer on a parchment liner in an air fryer basket, still pale and frosted
Straight from the freezer, single layer, air between the pieces.

Straight from the freezer onto a parchment liner, single layer, air between the pieces, a shake at the check time. At the quote: crisp, golden, hot through. The sauce packets warmed as the bag says and went over the top in the basket, which is the wet liner in the first photo.

Two cooks, two quotes that held. This one counts for more than the first because there was something to hold it against: a printed air fryer line from a kitchen that cooked the same food, and the converter, working from the oven line alone, came out beside it. One data point, and a clean one.

The chicken arrives cooked, but the USDA figure for poultry still applies: 165 °F (74 °C) at the center of the biggest piece. A probe settles it. Full food safety guide

A bag that prints its own air fryer line is the easy case. The one that prints only an oven line is what the converter is for, and it works the same way: the numbers go in, the picture matches the food, and the first look comes at the check time. Rating the cook moves the next quote closer to your machine.
